Iain Thornley reflecting as Wigan Warriors fell to a narrow defeat on his return to first team action following a lengthy injury lay-off.

Initially reflecting on the game itself, he said: “It’s always a hard place to come, Hull FC, so we expected it and it was that kind of game tonight as well with the conditions.

“There was still enough ways to win the game I think. It’s up to us now to dust ourselves off, look at it, not dwell on it too much and move on to next week.”

Despite the result, Thornley was pleased to make a try-scoring return to the side after a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury: “It’s always nice getting over and it gets me off the nudey this season. That’s my first run out for almost 12 months in Super League so it was good to be back and to get through the game safe and sound.”

Thornley also reflected on the benefits of his loan spells in preparation for coming back into Super League: “Someone like me who had a long-term injury, my first game back I could only play 60-minutes so I can’t be used in a Super League game – there’s vital points on the line.

“For me being able to go out on loan, it’s been great to build back my match fitness in the last few games. Hopefully the Clubs who did have me are proud of me representing them and it’s given me the opportunity to play tonight – I felt good going into and during the game.”

The Warriors winger also showed his appreciation to the travelling fans: “On a Thursday night – they’ve been working all day, all week and they’ve given the time to come here with work in the morning as well. It’s a massive thanks to them all and we appreciate it.”

Looking ahead to Wigan’s next game, he added: “We’ve got Leeds back-to-back now. We’ve got an 8-day turnaround so it gives the opportunity to do some good recovery and reflection on the game but we’ll definitely have a big week going into Friday’s game.

“The big one is that we’ll learn, improve and get ready.”
