Liam Farrell said the Warriors ‘have to be better’ after falling to defeat on the road at Leeds on Thursday night.

“It’s a tough one to take,” he said. “Leeds were by far the better team tonight, we just seemed to miss the start of the game, they were more intense with the ball and defended better than us in the first half and we didn’t match it.

“That compounded the rest of the game, they won the energy battle and things started to go their way. There was effort there to try and claw it back, but it was too late.”

He added: “We’ll never knock the lads for effort but I think early doors we put ourselves on the back foot, lost the energy battle and then effort just wasn’t enough.”

Farrell is confident that Wigan can react quickly to the defeat: “It was never going to be smooth sailing all year. We’ve had six months where we can probably be very pleased with ourselves but this is something that we’ll look at in some depth.

“There were areas to fix up and coming into this part of the year we’re going to have to be better because games start to get to a point where they’re intense like that week-in, week-out – so we have to be better.”

He finalised: “We’ll let it settle in our heads over the next couple of days and come up with the detail of where we went wrong. It’ll not be doom and gloom and we won’t think about it too much, it’ll be back to the process, back in Monday and we’ll look forward to next week.”
