Cade Cust spoke to Wigan TV on Wednesday afternoon in his first interview since arriving at Robin Park Arena.

“I’m excited to be here,” Cust said. “The last few weeks have been a bit of a waiting game with the visa clearance and stuff. It took about two weeks to get the visa and get it all through but I’m happy to finally get here and start training.

“It was very fast actually since the interest, it would have been about mid-November, it was a Tuesday. I spoke to my manager and by that Friday night we were released from Manly and signed with Wigan, it all happened really fast. I’m really grateful and can’t wait to see what’s in store.”

Cust explained the opportunity to come to Wigan gives him the chance to flourish in his preferred position as a half back: “When I got the message to see if I would be interested in going to Wigan, I know how much of a good Club it is and how much success they have had. The opportunity to play at 6 is a massive thing for me, I want to lead the team around the park, develop my game and be a running five-eight so the opportunity to have control of a team and show what I can do on the field was a major factor. I’m really excited.”

He added: “In the last couple of years at Manly I’ve played a bit at 9, the halves in front of me were Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran and they’re two people I’ve learnt a lot from so I bided my time and played at 9 a bit in the 17 but now to be able to play my preferred position in the 6, I’ll put my best foot forward and make sure I do everything I can on the field to bring the Club success.”

Cust completed his first day at Wigan on Wednesday, but is looking forward to more: “It was really good. The yo-yo test was a bit of a blow out, I’ve been sitting around in isolation for a couple of days so that came as a bit of a shock blowing away the cobwebs but it’s part of the training and I can’t wait to get into it.

“It’s very good, the facilities here, the training, weights, gym, they’re all really high class so I’m really happy to be here.”

The Aussie explained that he has already been getting to know his teammates from afar before landing in the UK: “I know a few of them, Abbas Miski I’ve played NRL with him at Manly and a couple of the guys like Jai Field and Kaide Ellis I’ve played against them in juniors so I’ve been in contact with blokes like them and Bev (Bevan French) I was in contact with before I came over, he said he’s really excited for the season and I can’t wait for us to play some footy together.”

Cust has opted to stay local during his time at Wigan, with the opportunity to be amongst the town and the fans.

Due to the current high risk of Covid-19, Cust is unable to meet fans for now. There were initial plans for a meet and greet with the half back in our Club Store when he arrived, but those plans are being put on hold for the time being.

Cust said: “It’s good to be closer to training, being around Wigan. I just want to spend some time to get to know people, get to know the fans – it’ll be good to meet everyone and have the boys around here. I didn’t want to be travelling too far from Manchester, it’s good to be close. I want to meet as many people as possible and just be around the Club, around Wigan.

“I’m a competitor, someone who will compete, I want to win games and I want to win comps. I want to be running five-eighth, have the ball in my hands a lot, and lead the boys around the park. I’m really excited for the year ahead, hopefully we will have a successful year. I’m looking forward to the year and hopefully we win the comp.”
