Adrian Lam believes his side can learn and improve following the ‘devastating’ Grand Final defeat to St Helens at the KCOM Stadium on Friday night.

In what will be remembered as one of the closest Grand Finals ever, a late and bizarre try from Jack Welsby snatched the trophy for Saints.

Speaking to the press following the final whistle via Zoom, Lam gave his thoughts on the result.

“We are heartbroken and devastated. It’s heartbreaking for all of the players, the staff and the fans.

“It was surreal. Even now I just want to rewind it all and have another go at it.”

Wigan coped well with many spells of pressure from Kristian Woolf’s side in throughout the game, and managed to score the first try of the final through Jake Bibby.

On the performance of his side, the boss said: “Saints had a lot of the ball and plenty of opportunities to post points, but I was really proud of our braveness in defending that time and time again.

“I don’t think they looked like scoring for the majority of the game, and had we executed better, we would have scored other tries.

“We just needed a little bit more luck in certain situations.”

He continued: “I couldn’t have been any prouder of who we were tonight.

“The lessons are we had five opportunities and we didn’t score enough of them. Next time we need to make sure we do.”

Looking ahead, the Papua New Guinean explained how light could be taken from the darkness of the defeat.

“We have been a completely different beast in the second half of the season. There have been so many positive signs there.

“Even though we lost tonight, you’ll see a completely different team in the next 12 months, a team that can dominate Super League.

“I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but we have taken big steps this season, and this will only motivate us for next year. Hopefully we can be back in this position next year to change that result.

“Tonight isn’t going to define us. I think there will be better times ahead.”
