Big Back Garden Sleep

Wigan Warriors are delighted to be working with The Brick on their Big Back Garden Sleep campaign, in an attempt to raise much-needed funds for the charity’s foodbank.

On Friday 24th April, The Brick, a charity which aims to support anyone who finds themselves homeless, is inviting the Wigan community to join them – either camping in their back garden, sleeping on trampolines or in a den in the living room.

Wigan Warriors are involved in the project as the Club aims to engage Warriors fans by setting the challenge of seeing which supporter can create the best decorated tent or sleeping set-up in Cherry and White – as part of the Warriors At Home social media campaign.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 crisis, there has been an unprecedented demand for the The Brick’s services, in particular, the charity’s Wigan town centre foodbank. In the last three weeks, there has been a 295% increase in demand for food parcels overall, and the charity has recorded a 348% increase in the need for food parcels for children.

The Brick’s donated food bank stock has decreased by 73% since the start of the crisis last month. This has been due, in the main, to the closure of the charity’s Wigan and Leigh retail shops and the end of fundraising initiatives from the charity’s many supporters; all income streams used to sustain the foodbank.

Keely Dalfen, Finance Director at The Brick, said: “We feel very privileged to be supported by a community orientated club such as Wigan Warriors, committed to making a positive difference at a local level and giving back to the fans.

“Here at The Brick, we have been looking at ways in which we can help our local community and children to keep entertained and involved in exciting projects throughout what can be a lonely and isolating time for many.

“It’s times like this, more than ever that we need people to come together and support each other so we have decided to resurrect the sleep-out at a distance and so we are inviting people to join us in the Big Back Garden Sleep.”

Wigan Warriors Media and Communications Executive, Matt Hennessey, said: “We’re delighted to be working with The Brick on this fantastic idea to engage the Wigan community.

“As a club, we want to do all we can to spread positivity and interact with our fans during these difficult times and having the Big Back Garden Sleep campaign as a challenge for our Warriors At Home series will allow us to do that, as well as raising awareness and donations for the The Brick.”
