Report

Having each won their opening two matches of the season, Wigan and Warrington met at Victoria Park with aims of making an immediate return to winning ways after defeats last time out.

The Warriors started with confidence as Connor Oxbury and Joe McGann each went close to breaking the deadlock inside six minutes, however, the hosts stood firm to keep the score level.

Wigan continued to ask questions of the Warrington defence as handling errors denied the hosts attacking opportunities, however, the Warriors were unable to find a way through.

The Warriors looked to have opened the scoring five minutes before half time when Noah Forster grounded George Marsden’s kick through, however, the try was ruled out for an offside offence.

Warrington turned defence into attack off the back of the penalty, and after twice being held up by the Warriors defence, a clever piece of play from Ewan Irwin saw the scrum half ground his own kick to give the hosts the lead. The score remained 4-0 at the break after an unsuccessful goal attempt.

An incorrect play the ball from the restart presented Warrington with possession 30m out, and after working play to the left wing at pace, Benjamin Goulden dived over in the corner. The kick from the touchline was off target as the points difference remained eight.

The Warriors responded instantly after a powerful carry from Fetherston saw the forward crash over between the sticks. Josh Tyrer added the extras to reduce the score to 8-6 on 52 minutes.

Warrington increased their advantage on the hour when Goulden crashed over in the corner following a dangerous break through the middle from Cameron Cooper. Despite a change of kicker, the hosts were unable to add the extras from out wide.

A threatening kick over the top forced the Warriors into conceding a drop out from which the hosts widened their lead when a powerful carry from Isaac Holdsworth resulted in Thomas Marshall going over between the sticks. Bishop regained control of the kicking duties to make the score 18-6.

Warrington’s Rhodes successfully kicked a drop goal attempt to increase the host’s lead in the closing stages, and despite almost adding a second try with the final action of the contest, the Warriors fell to a second defeat of the season.
