Matt Peet praised his side’s defensive ‘effort and endeavour’ as Wigan Warriors beat Catalans Dragons 30-8 at the DW Stadium.

Despite trailing 8-6 at the break, the Warriors scored four unanswered tries in an emphatic second half display to claim the two points.

Reflecting on the victory, Peet said: “It was a step in the right direction. Defensively we were very good and that was the main priority. We had to be at times because Catalans are a very powerful team with a great kicking game. Tonight was a great test of our defence and I could see our commitment in that area.”

Praising the impact of his interchanges, Peet added: “It’s a strength of ours at the moment and it needs to be as there is a lot of competition around the squad. Kruise came on and changed the tempo of the game and Patrick looked good as he’s getting deeper into the minutes. All four off the bench were good.”

On his half time team talk, Peet said: “I told them I could work with what I was seeing because there was plenty of effort and endeavour. I also told them that even at 8-0 I’d never been so confident as a coach because of the way we were defending and I knew the game would swing at some point.

Peet added: “I told them we had to relax with the ball but that was because we were putting so much effort in defence we lost some of the fundamentals in attack.”

Directing praise towards Assistant Coach Thomas Leuluai following Harry Smith’s try, Peet said: “Tommy showed that opportunity and discussed it with the lads and Harry picked the right time to execute the play. There were times when he chose not to go for it but when he did he nailed it which is the important thing. Credit to Tommy not just for spotting it, but for encouraging the lads to play that way.”
