Matt Peet praised his side after Wigan Warriors recorded a 36-14 win over Castleford Tigers at the DW Stadium.

The Warriors marked their return to Betfred Super League action with a dominant victory over Castleford as Liam Marshall and Ryan Hampshire scored twice a six-try win.

Reflecting on the performance, Peet said: “I was pleased with the fact that we were made to work harder and still got the job done. Castleford brought a lot of intent and energy from the off but we managed to overcome that before we built our way through the game.”

Ryan Hampshire surpassed 500 Super League points with two quick-fire second half tries, and on Hampshire, Peet said: after the break, to widen the Warriors’ lead, “He’s a popular member of the team who works so hard daily and when he steps in he brings an assuredness and calmness with his experience. That versatility is an important part of our squad as it allows us to take players out.”

Adam Keighran and Harry Smith maintained a perfect record from the tee in the victory, and on the kicking duties, Peet said: “I had a conversation with Harry this week and he was really positive about giving Adam an opportunity. They are really good friends who work really hard daily on their goal kicking. We are blessed to be in a good shape which I like.”

Zach Eckersley came off the interchange bench to make his first appearance at the DW Stadium, and praising the Centre’s performance, Peet said: “I liked the way Zach got himself stuck in and he produced some good moments. It’s my job to give Zach more minutes because he’s ready for Super League and at some point he will play in some big games for this Club.”

Explaining the changes to his 17-man squad, Peet said: “Brad O’Neill has been playing outstandingly well but we do have another very good hooker in Kruise [Leeming] who we wanted to give more minutes now that he’s fully recovered from injury. It’s also a way to protect Brad and keep him fresh as we will need him. Jai’s [Field] been nursing a bit of muscle tightness and we thought tonight was the right opportunity to give him a rest.”

Next up for the Warriors is a Betfred Super League clash against Hull KR at Craven Park. Tickets for the clash on Friday 26 April are now on general sale and can be purchased online HERE.
