  • FT | Leeds Rhinos 00-50 Wigan Warriors.

Matt Peet praised his side after Wigan Warriors returned to the top of the table following a 50-0 win over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium.

Speaking on the result, Peet said: “It was a really good performance against a really good team – I’m really pleased. I’ve just spoken to the team and said that people will see the score and think it was an easy win – it certainly wasn’t. The result required a ton of effort during the week and at the start of both half’s.”

On the performance, Peet said: “The lads can take the credit and it’s important to give them a pat on the back as what they’ve just done took a lot of physical and mental commitment. It’s something we can enjoy for an hour or two, but then you move onto trying to improve for next week.”

Speaking on Jake Wardle’s hat-trick, Peet said: “He’s got to be pleased after that. He’s a very skilful centre, he’s defending tough, and I love the way he’s playing at the moment. We’ve got ourselves a really quality player.”

On Liam Byrne’s injury, Peet said: “He’s going to need a scan a scan on his hamstring – fingers crossed for some positive news.”

The Warriors have kept a clean sheet in their last two away matches, and on the defence, Peet said: “Our defence was identified as an area which we needed to tighten up this year and Sean O’Loughlin’s done a fantastic job which has gone under the radar. He can be really proud of how the team are defending at the moment.”

Commenting on the the final two rounds of the regular season, Peet said: “The position we are in now we should be setting an aim to hold it. If we play well and get results against Castleford and Leigh then we’ll finish top. It’s a realistic aim now because if we turn up with the same sort of commitment and discipline as we did today then we can compete with anyone.”
