Wigan Warriors Liam Byrne says Friday’s clash against Hull FC will be a special night as the prop forward prepares to make his 100th appearance for the club.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Byrne said: “It’s crazy how quick it has gone. It only felt like yesterday when I first came to the club and even though it has gone really quick, it has been really enjoyable. Hopefully there is a lot more to come.”

Byrne marked his Wigan Warriors debut with a try against Hull FC in 2019, and speaking on his first appearance, he said: “I remember everyone telling me to enjoy it and to take it all in. I got a try as well which Sam Powell assisted with a kick through. It was a good day personally.”

When asked about his highlight in a Wigan shirt so far, Byrne said: “Winning the Challenge Cup. From the games we had to win in the build up, to getting to the final and winning it the way we did was the best thing ever.”

On working with Matt Peet, Byrne said: “I was on trial with the academy when I was 17, so I’ve worked with him ever since really. I’ve always known what he needs and what he expects from me, and it’s good to have him in my corner. He’s a great coach, and I’m very grateful for him.”

Byrne was rested for the Warriors’ 64-6 victory over Hull KR last time out, and speaking on the season so far, he said: “I’ve played through some things this season I haven’t been used to in the past. The team haven’t had the best of luck with injuries so there hasn’t been much chance to be rested – having the two week break was a massive help.”

Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Byrne added: “Every game is vital for us now in keeping ourselves as high as possible in the table. We are coming into this game off the back of a few good wins and week off to refresh, so everyone is ready to go again and continue building momentum.”
