The clash between two unbeaten sides was an entertaining spectacle at Robin Park Arena before the match was abandoned following an injury to Leeds Rhinos’ Toby Warren.

Report

John Winder’s Warriors started dangerously as they twice forced Leeds into defending their try line inside five minutes.

Wigan opened the scoring after eight minutes after Jacob Douglas initially burst free down the wing, before play was eventually worked wide to Junior Nsemba, who under pressure, was able to set Nathan Lowe up for a simple score in the corner.

Rhinos found touch from the resulting restart to gain territory deep in the Wigan half, and they took advantage when a short pass on the final tackle allowed Tom Nicholson-Watton to crash over under the posts with 10 minutes played.

Warriors hit back shortly after following an inch perfect grubber kick from Taylor Kerr was collected by Lowe who was able to run in under the posts for his second try. Jack Farrimond was able to kick his first points to give Wigan an 10-6 advantage.

With the aid of successive six agains, Leeds were able to patiently advance into Warriors 20m zone before Sam Walters powered his way over from close range. Jack Smith kicked his second goal to put Rhinos 12-10 ahead after 25 minutes.

A handling error allowed Leeds to regain possession inside Wigan’s defending half, and despite Walters’ attempt to break through the line for his second try, Warriors were able to hold the forward up.

Wigan took the lead minutes before the interval after a moment of brilliance saw Sumner side-step his way around the tackler before diving over. Farrimond was successful once more in adding the extras to give Warriors a 16-12 half-time lead.

The tries continued to come at Robin Park as Luis Roberts found space on the wing to accelerate over after 43 minutes. Smith was unsuccessful with the kick as the score remained level.

The match was halted after 55 minutes following an injury to Leeds’ Toby Warren. After a lengthy stoppage for medical treatment, the officials agreed with both captains to abandon the game with the score tied at 16-16.
