Peet: Tough to take

  • Matt Peet gave his thoughts as Wigan fell to a 42-12 defeat at the hands of Leeds on Thursday night.
  • Peet: “We take the rough with the smooth, and I think if we do that we’ll have more good nights than bad. It still hurts, but all credit goes to Leeds.”
  • FT | Leeds Rhinos 42-12 Wigan Warriors.

Matt Peet said the result was ‘tough to take’ as Wigan Warriors fell to a heavy defeat at Headingley Stadium on Thursday evening.

It’s tough to take, it hurts, the group are hurting. They know it was a below par performance, probably the first one of the season where it’s really tough to take, we missed a jump.”

Peet said: “On reflection, credit has to go to Leeds. I thought they beat us to the punch, they outworked us in the key areas of the game and they played with loads of desire which we expected.

“We have to judge ourselves on our last performance and at the moment that is it. Credit to Leeds, I thought they were full of energy, played with desire and with a desperation. When you combine that with the talent they’ve got, they pressure you into mistakes.”

He added: “We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to be a team who you know when they turn up you get a certain level of intensity – we weren’t there tonight.”

Peet stressed that his players are as disappointed as him: “We won’t be shy in talking about it, staff will reflect on how we can be better and we move forwards.

“Leeds had more intensity than we did, you see the kick chases they put in compared to ours and it’s not acceptable.”

Peet finalised: “We take the rough with the smooth, and I think if we do that we’ll have more good nights than bad. It still hurts, but all credit goes to Leeds.”
