  • FT | Wigan Warriors 40-6 Warrington Wolves.

The Reserves continued their perfect start to the season with a comfortable 40-6 victory over Warrington Wolves Reserves at Robin Park Arena on a summery Saturday afternoon.

Both sides fielded an array of Super League experience and started brightly, the Wolves went closest to the opening score inside five minutes as Greg Minikin raced down the wing and a superb chase from Adam Jones saw him catch the winger and prevent the try. However, the visitors did open the scoring as Daniel Brewin dived over from close range in the 24th minute with Leon Hayes converting for a 6-0 lead.

The lead lasted just three minutes as Jack Bibby spied a gap in the Wolves defence and sent a grubber kick through before collecting and crossing for the try with Adam Jones converting to level at 6-6. Wigan completed the turnaround on 32 minutes as a clever passing play saw the ball find Logan Astley who powered over for a try which Jones improved for 12-6.

After success on the left side from Bibby earlier on, Jones tried his luck on the far side with a grubber kick and it bounced perfectly for him to collect and touchdown for a try which he converted for a strong 18-6 lead into the half-time interval.

The Wigan spree continued in the second half with a try on the  left wing from Ben O’Keefe which he converted superbly from the touchline to extend the lead to 24-6 in the 47th minute. Warrington were soon found out on the near side with Tom Mitchell diving over in the corner after collecting a rapid offload from Alex Sutton, O’Keefe converting for 30-6 with 53 minutes played.

The pacy passing of the Warriors soon paid off again as Mitchell found space on the wing to finish off a clever cross-field move and claim his second try of the afternoon, O’Keefe conversion sadly cannoned back off the post at 34-6.

The best try of the afternoon proved to be the last as Kieran Tyrer intercepted a pass just inside his own half and raced down the field to cross for a stunning try, O’Keefe’s conversion sailed through the posts backed by a roar from the Warriors fans who celebrated as the referee blew the final whistle seconds later to signal a huge 40-6 win.
