Liam Marshall spoke to Wigan TV after scoring a double against St Helens to confirm a Betfred Challenge Cup Final appearance for Wigan Warriors.

At full time, he said: “I was shouting and screaming in that game and singing at the end. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, we didn’t make it easy, we clocked off a bit at the beginning of the second half and let them roll back in. It was very tough but the ball bounced up for me and I managed to get the breakaway try and I felt I needed to give the team one back for a dropped ball earlier.

“I’m just ecstatic to get that result, they’re a quality side but we’re through to the final.”

With a 14-0 lead at half time, the game swung into St Helens hands with three quick tries after the restart. Speaking on that period of the game, Marshall said: “We were in a good position but it’s strange, you speak about them coming at you in the second half and that’s something you need to be switched on for, we couldn’t have spoken enough about that but it didn’t go that way. They got some momentum, scored some tries and they were in front. I think we showed some mental toughness, which we haven’t had in the past, to get back in the game and we’re ecstatic with the result and it’ll go a long way that win.”

He added: “It’s about going back to basics, completing your sets and defending well. It felt like it was snowballing at one point, we kicked off they were rolling up the field and we gave penalties away to put them on the front foot. Luckily enough we managed to break that with the try and a lot of mental toughness was shown today, the lads were outstanding– every single one of them.”

It was Marshall who got the winning try on the afternoon, picking up a loose ball to race away. On the effort, he said: “I was just hoping my little legs would get me there. They were on the front and they had us done for numbers until the pass went to ground and luckily bounced up for me, a bit of an opportunist try but I was thinking in my head ‘please don’t get caught’ but the winning try which is great.”
