Courage during Crisis – Never give in!

An Easter message from Glen, our Club Chaplin.

Unprecedented times call for unprecedented co-operation, determination, and effort. Someone has said that in some ways the current crisis is worse than a war. During war time, the enemy can generally be seen or heard, but this foul virus is silent and invisible. However, as Churchill said “ Never give in – never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense”. So take heart, after all we follow the “Warriors”!

Never give in making contact. Those around you, particularly the elderly, love to hear from you and may need help. I have heard so many encouraging stories of those who are are going out of their way to help others.

Contact is particularity important for those who have lost someone. You may not know what to say. “I’m really sorry for your loss” is sufficient, then just listen. Loss brings the sharpest of pain and to simply reach out is of immense value. We at the Club extend our heart felt condolences to those suffering loss at this time.

If there is someone in the family who you have not spoken to because of a family rift, why not pick up the phone? Reach out.

Never give in counting your blessings! We still have so much to be thankful for. Apart from other blessings, we have an amazing NHS and other support services. If you know any key workers, ask them if they need help and assist with say shopping, if you are able to. Even send a “thank you” text to encourage them. We can also go out and clap at 8pm on Thursday’s. These people are heroes. Be thankful.

Never give in to fear or despair. Follow all the government guidelines that by now are so clear to us. Stay in, when out for exercise or shopping remember the social distancing protocols and stay safe. Oh and don’t forget to wash your hands! We can come through this. Be encouraged.

Keep your sense of humour. For the moment, the bins are going out more than me! Laughter is a great medicine. There is always something to laugh about. Choose to smile when you can and bring a sense of lightness and brightness to those around you. We can come through this, and the time will come when this will be over. Be hopeful.

Never give in praying. Here I go again. I’m allowed, I’m Club Chaplain. But seriously, try praying. I know the value of prayer. I know a God who is neither aloof nor indifferent to our suffering. During Holy week, we are reminded that Christians believe God took on human form and suffered and died on a Roman cross, in order to pay the price for your sins and mine. I believe that, because of what Jesus did, we can approach God and receive forgiveness and a peace that passes understanding. Amazing! The God that I believe in, understands our suffering and promises to draw close to those who seek Him. Easter time reminds me of this.

Never give in supporting the Warriors. The Club really does appreciate your support. Even though times are difficult, we look forward to celebrating with you once this is all past. Be strong and take heart.

Update: My wife will not give in trying to get me into that garden! I still hate gardening. My best wishes to all for Easter.
