St Oswald’s try out Rugby League

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation are pleased to have had another successful term of primary school engagement.

Our focus school this term has seen St Oswald’s Primary School, which typically had a low demand for Rugby League provision, now has a weekly session with our Community Foundation coach, Tom Little.

Tom has incorporated Rugby League into as many different sessions as possible. The power of the Wigan Warriors’ badge has been effective and more and more pupils have started wearing Community Club kits with Rugby League conversations going on all the time.

Recently, the school were also treated with the chance to have their picture with Wigan’s current silverware collection, including the Super League Trophy, League Leaders’ Shield, and Wheelchair Super League trophy.

Headteacher of the school, Mrs Hassan said: “It was great to have Tom bring the Warriors trophies into school – the children were so excited to see them for real and they were amazed at how big they are!

“They loved reading the inscriptions and we were surprised at how knowledgeable some of our pupils were about the competitions. It really highlighted to us that we have more Rugby League fans in school than we realised, and I’m sure there will be more in the future judging by the level of interest in the trophies.”

Community Foundation Coach, Tom Little, added: “Working with over 200 pupils a week at St Oswald’s, I’m really starting to see a development in Rugby League. With the school and area being renowned for its football, it’s great to see a rise in Rugby League interest and hopefully with the work myself and the foundation do, we can grow it even more.”
