Matt Peet expressed his pride of a ‘special group’ after Wigan Warriors beat penrith panthers 16-12 to be crowned world champions for a fifth time.

Abbas Miski, Kruise Leeming and Jake Wardle scored tries as the Warriors defeated the NRL champions on a historic night at the DW Stadium, as Wigan lifted a World Club Challenge for a record equalling fifth time.

Sharing his emotions post-match, Peet said: “I feel proud of a special group of players. The players have done what they’ve done and I’ve been a part of that with them. It was a special night.”

Speaking on the players, Peet said: “When you are watching this group of players turn up continuously for one another like they did, it’s hard to sum up your emotions straight after the game on the result.”

Peet added: “There was pure want, desire, commitment – whatever word you want to show how much they cared for that game of rugby. That symbolises the group of people, the town, the Club, and you don’t get that sort of commitment unless you care for one another. “

On facing Penrith Panthers, Peet said: “We were always confident we could defend, but we were also confident that if we did get a go that we could be clinical. Penrith are very powerful athletes and sometimes when you get the ball you are in survival mode. We battled through the challenges against an outstanding team.”

Looking forwards, Peet said: “Whether we won or lost tonight, it was always going to be a great learning experience for us. We’ve got to learn and improve as players and coaches. We want to keep learning.”

On Bevan French’s disallowed try, Peet said: “I was gutted it didn’t get given as it would have been an unbelievable moment for the group, but I’m so proud we had the courage to make that play. It wasn’t the obvious one, but we’d worked on it in the week and I love that they made the decision in such a high pressure moment.”
