Patrick Mago reflected on his Man of the Match performance as Wigan Warriors opened the super league season with a 32-4 win over Castleford Tigers at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

The Warriors prop forward scored and assisted in the victory in West Yorkshire, and speaking post-match, Mago said: “We knew coming here was going to be a hard so we just focused on what we needed to do – it’s good to come away with the two points.”

Mago’s try contributions saw the Warriors lead 16-4 at the break, before a Liam Marshall double and a debut score from Kruise Leeming sealed a comfortable win.

On scoring the Warriors’ first try of the Super League season, Mago said: “I was not expecting that. It was just being in the right place at the right time, but it was good to be there and get the score.”

Speaking through his try assist, Mago said: “The centre came towards me so I thought I’d put a little step on which didn’t work so I just offloaded to Bevan who finished it. I really wanted to try and get that one but speed isn’t something that I have – that’s the next thing I need to work on.”

Mago was chosen as the Warriors fans Man of the Match after receiving 61% of the votes, and reflecting on his performance, he said: “I didn’t go back home this year so I could focus more on pre-season and my fitness which is something I’ve always tried to work on. I’m still trying to get that right but I feel like the decision not to home has paid off.”

The Warriors host Penrith Panthers in the Betfred World Club Challenge on Saturday, and looking ahead to the showdown, Mago said: “It’s massive and something I never thought I’d be a part of when in the NRL. I know everyone at the Club is looking forward to what will be a big week ahead.

“We’ll enjoy this win before coming back in on Monday to knuckle down and start working on Penrith who will be up for it as well.”
