Wigan Warriors Centre Nathan Lowe reflects on the 2024 pre-season after featuring in the friendly against Midlands Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.
Lowe signed for Wigan’s Scholarship programme in 2020 from Wigan St. Jude’s, before moving onto the Academy in 2022 where he has gone on to feature regularly.
Lowe joined the first team in Portugal for their 10-day training camp, gaining an important opportunity to spend some time around the senior players: “Portugal was really good, a great experience. It was fantastic to be around the squad more.
“It’s a massive step up really with the physicality and everything, it makes for a big challenge – but I like challenges and pushing myself, so it’s exactly what I want.”
The 18-year-old started in the Warriors’ first pre-season outing away to Midlands Hurricanes, where the cherry and whites fought hard to earn a 24-20 win. Despite exchanging the lead twice with the home team, the young Wigan side showed their potential to come out victorious.
“It was good to go against some tougher bodies and wrestle with them in the game”, said Lowe. “I felt great and my body is getting in really good shape, so it was a really good test.”
Looking ahead to this season, Lowe has set out some strong targets: “I want to keep playing well in the Academy and Reserves games and see where I can get to by the end of the year.
“My goals for this season are to hopefully push into the first team, have a really good year and show Matt Peet what I’m about.”
The Warriors second pre-season fixture comes away to Wakefield Trinity on Friday 26th January. Tickets are now off-sale online but remain on sale in-store at the Official Club Store until 3pm on Friday 26th January costing £5 Adults and £1 Juniors.
