Wigan Warriors hooker Brad O’Neill provides a pre-season update and shares his pride in finding out his shirt number for 2024.
O’Neill returned to Robin Park Arena at the end of November to start pre-season alongside fellow Super League Grand Final winners Liam Marshall and Patrick Mago.
Speaking on his opening weeks of pre-season, O’Neill said: “It’s gone well so far and it’s been enjoyable but tough as you’d expect when you come back for pre-season. We’re at the end of another week in which we’ve had some tough gym and field sessions, but the lads keep digging in and finding that way through it.”
The Warriors announced the 2024 squad numbers earlier this week, which saw O’Neill, who wore the No.22 shirt last season, given the No.9 shirt for the upcoming campaign.
On finding out his squad number for 2024, O’Neill said: “It was a very proud moment personally for myself and my family as I’ve been at the Club since I was 13 and getting this jersey has always been one of my long-term goals – it was a nice shock and surprise.”
O’Neill, who lifted the League Leaders’ Shield and Super League trophy in 2023, was named as Wigan Warriors’ Young Player of the Season as well as being nominated for the Super League Young Player of the Year award.
On his aims for the upcoming campaign, O’Neill said: “I’m still only young so it’s about building on last year whilst continuing to learn and work hard. Last year was great for me as a player – and for the team – and it’s important now that we get together as a group to continue this great pre-season.”
On Tuesday night O’Neill and the Warriors will train in front of supporters at Robin Park Arena, as the ‘Night Under The Lights’, in association with The Brick, returns ahead of the 2024 Super League season.
The night provides supporters with the opportunity to watch all of the available First Team train in an open session, before a meet and greet with the players will take place after training.
Speaking on the importance of the night, O’Neill said: “It’s a great night which is something different for us as a team as we get to enjoy the buzz of having the fans there and getting to meet them all afterwards. The fans mean so much to us so it’s important for us to give back to them.”
The event is free to attend with a ticket which can be obtained HERE, however, supporters are asked to bring a much-needed item on the night which will be donated to The Brick.
O’Neill added: “Wigan is one big community and if we as a Club can give as much as we can to help underprivileged people out in the area. Hopefully on Tuesday night we can collect a lot of donations for the Brick as they are such an important charity and their work means a lot to the whole community.”
