Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell is ready to make his country ‘proud’ after his inclusion in England’s 19-man squad to face Tonga in Sunday’s opening Test match.

Farrell, who lifted the Super League trophy at Old Trafford last weekend, has been named in England’s 19-player squad by Head Coach, Shaun Wane, for the series opener at the Totally Wicked Stadium

If selected, the Warriors skipper will make his first England appearance since October 2021, along with Wigan teammates Harry Smith and Toby King, who will both be hoping to gain their second caps having also been named the squad.

Reflecting on the leading the Warriors to the Super League title, Farrell said: “It was a surreal feeling but one that I’ve not had a proper chance to let sink in due to coming straight into the England camp. There were a lot of emotions and hard work which went into it, and in the end we got what we deserved.”

Farrell joined up with the rest of the 24-man squad – which includes Tyler Dupree – on Wednesday, before completing two days of training at Robin Park Arena.

On being selected for his country, Farrell said: “You don’t get a lot of opportunities to represent your country so it’s important you take them when they come. It’s a chance to make my family proud and my country proud.”

Speaking on the first two days of camp, Farrell said: “We got straight into the thick of it on Wednesday and all the lads are starting to get a long. We’ve started really well with a couple of good training sessions over the last few days which is building nicely for the start of the Test this weekend.”

The historic series, which is the first between the two nations and their first meeting since the 2017 World Cup semi-final, gets underway at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday, before the remaining matches will be contested at the John Smith’s Stadium and Headingley.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s opener against Tonga, Farrell said: “They’re a very strong and physical team with a lot of talent. We know what to expect from them, but it’s more about us doing a job as England and representing the country the best we can.”
