Matt Peet says it will be a ‘really proud’ feeling leading Wigan Warriors out in Saturday’s Super League Grand Final against Catalans Dragons at Old Trafford.

Looking ahead to the Grand Final, Peet said: “I’m looking forward to it. It’s been an exciting week which beats sitting at home sulking and watching other teams play in this game. It’s credit to the lads for earning this opportunity and we intend to take it.”

Speaking on the clash against the Dragons, Peet said: “We are very aware this is going to be our most intense game of the year. A lot of our conversations have been around us playing our best rather than adapting to Catalans as we know our best performance will be a match for most teams.”

On preparations for the Grand Final, Peet said: “We’re trying our best to approach it as any other game. There are things around this one that’s different, like the media event and staying in a hotel the night before, but come kick off we know we’ll be coming up against a fantastic team. We’re expecting a very intense game but as far as emotions go it won’t be any different to previous weeks.”

On the comparisons of winning the Challenge Cup to winning a Grand Final, Peet said: “The Challenge Cup win was an outstanding feeling for the Club but we ended the season on a bit of a sour note. To get to a Grand Final and compete against an outstanding team is another step in the right direction, and winning this one would show more consistency which is what every player and coach is looking for.”

Peet has made one change to his 21-man squad as Ethan Havard returns from an injury to replace Cade Cust.

On Havard’s fitness, Peet said: “He’s fit and good to go. There is always some risk attached when a player returns from injury but this is always a game that Ethan was going to be ready for. There’s no surprise internally, but also there’s no way we’d be putting him in if he hadn’t gone through all the checks and trained fully this week.”

Sharing his pride on reaching the Grand Final, Peet said: “I’m proud, really proud. I’m proud of the lads, the team, the Club, and to get the privilege of walking out beside Liam Farrell is quite humbling really.”

Speaking on the support from the fans and the local area, Peet said: “The excitement and buzz around the town is why we do it. One of the reasons why we get amongst the community, the schools and our local clubs is that come events like this we hope everyone here feels a part of the team and the squad.”
