Matt Peet shared his pride of the whole club as Wigan Warriors beat Leigh Leopards 10-6 to lift the League Leaders’ Shield at Leigh Sports Village.

On winning the League Leaders’ Shield, Peet said: “I’m really proud as it’s a great achievement and a great pat on the back for the whole club. It secures a home semi-final and a week off which is the best route to the Grand Final, as well as a piece of silverware in the trophy cabinet which the supporters will enjoy.

“The Grand Final will be the main prize no doubt, but this win shows consistency throughout the year which is a great token of appreciation for everyone involved with the club.”

On the game, Peet said: “It was very intense and at a level that we haven’t been involved in for a while. We knew it was going to be that kind of game and that we’d have to go the full 80 minutes, and I’m proud of the team as ultimately it’s our great effort on the night that kept us in it.”

Speaking on the type of performance, Peet said: “It was perfect that we got this kind of game under our belt ahead of the play-offs. Even though it wasn’t the most fluent performance, at this time of the year it’s about guts and determination. All in all it was a great night.”

On Leigh Leopards, Peet said: “Leigh were outstanding and I thought at times they were on top, but we just kept turning up for one another. To concede one try against such a good team who put us under a lot of pressure makes me really proud. We will learn a lot from this game which is the most important thing.”

Harry Smith made his 100th appearance for the Club in the victory, and on Smith, Peet said: “I’m really proud of the player and the man Harry is becoming. You watch the way he plays and the way he manages that game tonight, and his energy and effort in defence as well was superb. Himself as well as his family should be proud as well.”

Looking ahead to the semi-final, Peet said: “It’s important that the lads refresh after a physical battle, but we have three training days next week as it’s important that we get work done on the training ground. We will be smart as we don’t want to waste the rest and overtrain, but we’ve got to get work done as well.”

Praising the whole Club, Peet said: “I’m really proud of the way everyone – coaches, players and all the staff – are working at the moment. We’ve now got to be our best in the semi-final to give ourselves the best chance of winning the big one.”
