Competence at Wigan Warriors in partnership with Wigan Council celebrate Job Ready Course success with students successfully obtaining employment in the active leisure industry.

John Angelsea was searching for the right opportunity to ‘retrain’ and develop the required skills and qualifications to make the transition into a new career within the Health & Fitness Industry.

The 46-year-old signed up to the ‘Job Ready Level 2 Gym Instructor Course’ after viewing the course advertisements through both Wigan Warriors and Wigan Council media channels.  He was aware that as a Wigan and Greater Manchester resident, he would be eligible to receive financial support in covering the course fees.

The Job Ready Level 2 Gym Instructor course provided the perfect platform to turn that aspiration into reality.  Across a 12-week period, John studied with Competence at Wigan Warriors, based at the Robin Park Arena with access to first class gym and training facilities generally exclusive to only professional rugby league athletes.

Through the partnership with Wigan Council, John received regular information from key council staff around work experience opportunities, securing a gym and leisure assistant placement working across multiple Wigan based leisure facilities.

After completing his Level 2 Gym Instructor course, John attended the course presentation evening to collect his well-earned certificates, with the added bonus of securing a formal interview for a full-time role within Wigan Council Leisure services.

John Angelsea said: “My Job Ready Programme was about using the facilities at Wigan Warriors College to gain the qualifications to work within the leisure, sport & fitness industry along with Wigan Council using all of their facilities as well.

“The experience was very good; the instructors were very knowledgeable. They had a lot of time to show you the different techniques and plenty of opportunities to ask one-to-one questions.

“My placement was at Standish Leisure Centre, and I was given the freedom to fit the hours around my lifestyle to shadow the gym instructors.

“I’d advise people who are thinking of signing up, don’t hesitate, it was probably one of the best things I ever did and it gave me the confidence to pursue a career in the leisure and fitness industry.”

John is just one of many adult students to benefit from this meaningful programme.
