Peet Previews Huddersfield

  • Matt Peet spoke with the press ahead of Friday’s trip to Huddersfield.
  • Peet: “It’s up there with the toughest games of the year to play at Huddersfield.”
  • Huddersfield Giants vs Wigan Warriors, Friday 17th March, 7:45pm K.O.

Head Coach Matt Peet says he expects Huddersfield to be in the mix and competing this year ahead of facing the West Yorkshire outfit on Friday.

The Warriors are looking to bounce back after suffering defeat in a hard-fought contest against Catalans on Thursday: “A combination of things meant that we didn’t play the way we wanted to and if that sort of game presents itself again we need to adjust our game and play smarter, execute much better with the ball particularly and certain elements of our defence as well. It was frustrating but we move on quickly.”

This week Peet’s side make the trip to the John Smith’s Stadium to face Huddersfield, the Head Coach said: “It’s up there with the toughest games of the year to play at Huddersfield. They’re very consistent, they have good players with plenty of strength in depth whilst being very well coached with Ian Watson. There’s a lot to admire about Huddersfield, it’ll take the best of us at the weekend, no doubt.

“They’ve got a lot of resource. I feel like they’re a team that have to be in the mix now. They’ve got the coach they want and the squad they want, so I think they’re in that group of clubs that have to compete, including ourselves.

On Huddersfield, he added: “They’re very consistent in what they do, methodical with a few players who bring that point of difference as well. You know what you’re going to get and consistency is high on the list. I think it bodes well on their Club as a whole, I think they’re doing a good job.”

Wigan will be looking to make it three wins out of their five opening Betfred Super League fixtures, with victories against Wakefield and Castleford leaving them third in the table.

“I think we’ve shown glimpses but we’ve played four very different games. I think this week will be another different challenge,” Peet said.

“In the opening 10 rounds or so it’s very alive, where one week teams are up and the next week they’ve had a wobble, but we focus on ourselves and at the moment it’s about trying to perform back to our best.”
