WWCF Schools Rugby Development

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation are pleased to have delivered into 17 local high schools during the first term of the New Year.

Delivery has seen the Community Foundation engage with almost 1,300 participants through Rugby Development activities through our local schools programme.

Alongside school engagement sessions, all participants were invited to showcase their skills at the end of term festival based at Wigan Warriors high performance training facility at Robin Park Arena. The Year 8 boys festival was well attended with 5 schools competing in the first Emerging Schools festival of the year.

The Year 8 girls festival was another fantastic end of term playing opportunity with Deanery and Standish High playing a competitive round of games.

Rugby League Development Manager, John Whalley, said: “The high school’s rugby programme across the whole borough is on a real high at the moment, with all schools really engaging with the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation.

“Our development officers are busy delivering a curriculum timetable into 17 high schools per week with over 1,200 boys and girls engaging in rugby league activities. In addition, we offer extra-curricular sessions and a 9-a-side boys and girls festival each term based at Robin Park.”

Jenny Leitch, Head of PE at Standish High School added: “Having the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation coaches in Standish CHS is fantastic. The partnership has thrived over the years, and we are really grateful for the support and opportunities they have been able to provide our school community.

“The coaches provide a valuable addition to our extra-curricular programme and have supported in the delivery of rugby league in our PE curriculum. This has provided opportunities for both students and staff to develop their skills and in turn really helped promote and develop rugby in our school. Kaitlin [Hilton] is also a fantastic ambassador for Wigan Warriors, she has inspired the girls to get involved and love the game.”

Next term will again see more Rugby development sessions delivered across Wigan schools with local development officers Rachel Thompson, James Barran and Kaitlin Hilton.
