Peet previews Catalans

  • Matt Peet looks ahead to Friday’s game against Catalans Dragons.
  • Peet: “There are a few changes that have to happen in our line-up which will be nice to get some combinations going.”

Matt Peet says there is “a good chance” that Sam Powell should be back for the Betfred Super League Play-Off Semi Final that will be played on Friday 16th September.

Powell has been out since the end of July with an injury to his foot and will be “back in contention for the Semi Final”.

Peet told Wigan TV: “It’s a good chance he’ll come back into contention for the Semi Final. He’s ticking all the boxes and should get a full week of training next week. Another welcome addition. He brings so much on and off the field.”

Thomas Leuluai is back in the squad this week and has also announced he will be hanging up his boots and will be taking over the role currently filled by Lee Briers.

Peet thinks it’s “fantastic” to have him back now and he can’t wait to have him as a coach next to him next year.

He said: “It’s such a natural progression for him. He’s almost liked a Coach now. He leads our leadership group. There’s a lot of trust and he’s the main link. It’s a real natural step for him. He has strong opinions and philosophies on the way the game should be played and understands the ethos of the Club. I couldn’t think of anyone better to coach alongside next year.”

When asked on paying tribute to Leuluai after years of service and leadership, Peet said: “I’m one of his biggest fans. People will come out and speak about him on both sides of the world. He’s one of those who commands respect in the game. He has a perfect balance in him in the way he plays the game.

“He’s ultra-physical, some skill and flair in there but also a great degree of respect for the game – for his own team and for the opposition. He’s a great example to any young or old professional. Personally, I owe him a great deal. I’ve learned so much off him, he’s someone I always go to for advice. To have him as Captain has been really beneficial for me.”

Peet wants to also continue the unbeaten run at home that only Wigan currently have this season in Super League.

“It’s great to continue that. We talk about getting performances. We know we’ve got that Semi Final, so we want to be in form – individually and collectively. There are a few changes that have to happen in our line-up which will be nice to get some combinations going.

“It’s important we build on the atmosphere and the connection between the supporters and the team. It’s another opportunity to play in front of our fans.”

Friday’s game against Catalans Dragons is themed in tribute for all key workers. Peet said: “Another great initiate from the Club. It symbolises our respect for those who work so selflessly. It allows us to pay respect and give them appreciation. It is massively appreciated what these people have done for us – particularly these last few years.”
