Matt Peet gave his thoughts ahead of Friday’s Round 24 Super League game against Toulouse Olympique at the DW Stadium.

Quickly reflecting on Sunday’s result, Peet said: “We understand where we went wrong, we understand where Wakefield got the better of us but we’ve moved on relatively quick. The turnaround meant we didn’t have much choice, it was quite a unique game with the heat so Friday can’t come soon enough.”

On this week’s opponent Toulouse, he said: “They’ve got a hell of a lot to play for and one of the things about Wakefield was they were desperate, so we’ve got to expect that same kind of commitment from Toulouse.  They’ve got some talented players and if they have their share of the ball and field position with the kicking game that they’ve got and the skill on the edges – they’re going to trouble any team.

“I think they’ve got strong ball carriers, Matty Russell is an outstanding ball carrier. They’ve got great kickers of the ball as well, every time they get into a position to kick they’re a real threat and their yardage kicks are outstanding as well. They’ve got good players so we understand that if we start slow, then we’re in for a battle.”

John Bateman has been named in the squad after a five-week layoff with a broken rib: “It’s a timely boost. He’s been working hard and he’s been dying to play for a while now. He’s looking great in training, obviously he’s a quality player but he brings that leadership to us as well.”

Peet mentioned the Club’s initiative of ‘inclusivity day’ on Friday evening: “I think it’s what sport is about, bringing people together. I remember during Covid when we were playing in front of empty stadiums, so to have a game like this where everyone is made to feel welcome, from all walks of life, it’s what I want the sport to be about and I think it’s what this sport does better than anyone else.”

He added: “I think that is what Rugby League does really well. I, and the Club, are really passionate about it, everyone here understands that is part of our culture and everyone is made to feel welcome from all walks of life. Our teams are a celebration of that and our fans are a celebration of that so I’m really looking forward to it – it’s important that we perform and play a good brand of rugby so that everyone comes and has a good night. We know we have a battle on our hands, but it should be a good night for everyone in the stadium.”
