Peet: Second best

  • Matt Peet gave his thoughts following Sunday’s loss away at Wakefield.
  • Peet: “It was fine margins, as teams have found out here in recent weeks.”
  • FT | Wakefield Trinity 30-12 Wigan Warriors.

Matt Peet said he knew Wigan were ‘second best’ as the Warriors couldn’t overcome a determined Wakefield side with some key names missing.

“I thought Wakefield started the better team and they managed the game really well,” Peet said at full time, ” they dictated the tempo of the game and we never quite put it together for long enough and Wakefield were very good. They kicked really well, forced a lot of repeat sets and at times we compounded poor execution with the ball with a bit of ill-discipline.”

He added: “I think it was a very different game [to last week]. I thought we built the game against Warrington, I thought we were kind of chasing the game more here. I always felt quite comfortable in the Warrington fixture whereas today I knew we were second best.”

Questioned on what Wigan’s downfall was on the day, Peet said: “There were a few factors today. Most importantly a very determined Wakefield team who fought their way to victory and deserve commending for not just their determination but their intelligence as well, they kicked really well.

“Anyone who was on the ground live today would know that the lads had a crack, we fought right until the end, we were moving the ball and we defended determinedly – it was more a case of lack of execution, whether that was tackle technique or Wakefield defending well on the edges so there were a few passes in front and behind. It was fine margins, as teams have found out here in recent weeks.”
