Field: Take the positives

Jai Field said Wigan will ‘take the positives’ after a thrilling derby game against St Helens at Magic Weekend.

After the full time hooter, Field said: “It’s a tough one to swallow. We were in it and it was probably ours to win with a few minutes to go, credit to us we did well to be in the game with the possession they had that whole second half and the cheap ball we gave them. We’ll learn some lessons from that, take the positives from it and move on.”

Wigan were down to 12-men with 15 minutes to go as Brad Singleton was shown a red card. On how it affected the game, Field said: “Everyone knows that they try and get you in a corner and pin you there, losing Singo [Brad Singleton] with around 15-minutes to go, it makes our middles work a bit harder, fatigue sets in and some offloads and errors gives them some cheap ball and points in the back end which stings.”

Bevan French scored in the 70th minute as Wigan went over despite the man disadvantage: “We showed great adversity I think, in that first half we gave them so much ball and in the second half they just pinned us in the corner so I think we showed some resilience in that moment which was nice and we’ll take some positives out of it.

“We got on with it, we still had our moments and chances to win but it just wasn’t our day.”

The full-back added: “It stings, but there’s more games to go. We’ll move on and hopefully catch them down the back end of the season.”
