Peet: Learn a lot

Matt Peet says his side will ‘learn a lot’ as they fell to a narrow defeat at the hands of St Helens at Magic Weekend on Saturday evening.

At full time, Peet said: “I’m disappointed with the loss, particularly here at Magic, it’s an occasion you want to enjoy with a win but I think we’ll learn a lot from the game in terms of building and sustaining pressure. I thought our effort and commitment levels were there to be seen but I just thought we were a bit off, particularly with our ball control.”

On the performance, he said: “I think the lessons to learn from our performance were there well before the result was determined. I thought it was clear that we defended quite well and we dealt with a lot of what Saints had to throw at us but we didn’t get out of our own end enough which is a typical thing when you play against a team like St Helens because they defend so well and when we did get some field position I thought we lacked a little bit of composure but again that is what pressure brings.”

He added: “I think on the whole you could see that when the game was set-for-set, Saints were a little bit in front of us and they were missing players, as were we, but it’s probably easier to dig into the lessons learned from the fact that we didn’t get the win.”

Questioned on his team selection headache, Peet said: “It was very hard to pick the team. Kai Pearce-Paul was set to play but he took ill overnight, when you look across both groups of players and across this weekend, every squad is being tested at the moment, every Club is being tested and dipping into their Academy so the team that contest the big games at the end of the year will be the ones who’s whole squad stands up to the test. It’s not just the best team but everyone in the team has to be able to get the job done.”

Wigan return home to the DW Stadium for Round 19 of Betfred Super League this Friday 15th July as we look to bounce back against Hull FC. Ticket are available to buy HERE.
