Sam Powell said Wigan will ‘soak up the atmosphere’ as they prepare to face St Helens at St James’ Park on Saturday evening.

Attending the media day in Newcastle earlier this week, Powell said: “The pitch looks immaculate, it’s absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait to get out there really.

“There’s a different feel to the weekend, and so there should be. I think our fans especially buy into the concept of coming up here, they enjoy it and make a weekend of it and as the weekend is called, it’s a bit magic.”

He added: “We don’t see everything going on around the ground but we get to soak up the atmosphere when we get onto the pitch. Seeing fans of different teams mixing together in one weekend is great and I suppose that is what Rugby League is all about.”

On facing St Helens, Powell said: “The game alone, to the town everyone knows what it means but to be here at St James’ Park as well makes it special. Saints have been the benchmark for the last few years so it’s going to be a great game. I know the fans will be well behind us and it should have that special feel about it.”

Wigan come into the game in good form, something which Powell admits come down to enjoyment: “I think we’ve played good Rugby all year to be honest and we’re just enjoying what we’re doing as a Club. We’re putting one another first and working hard so game day is just the end result of all the work that gets put in during the week. We’ll work hard again this week and have a good crack at it on Saturday.”

The Warriors are also expecting a big following to Newcastle, having sold more tickets than previous years: “That’s testament to how we’re travelling as a team this year. The work that Matt Peet has done in the Community, he’s given us leadership and driven us in that way. There’s a real connection around the town and it’s great to hear that they’ll be coming in numbers.”

Finally, Powell spoke on the Sky Zero commitment: “We experienced a bit about that on the way up here, we were in a Tesla Electric car which was pretty cool, I’ve not been in one of those before. It’s about the small changes, everyone drinks coffee, but does everyone use a reusable cup? It’s little things like that which can make a difference.

“I’ve got children so sending them to school with a reusable water bottle, not buying disposable bottles of water every day, little things like that make me want to buy into it, and to educate them as well.”
