Peet previews Saints

  • Matt Peet spoke to the press earlier this week as he offered his pre-match thoughts ahead of Magic Weekend.
  • Peet: “There’s lessons learned from the weekend and there’s plenty of reasons to be excited this week going into Magic.”
  • Wigan Warriors v St Helens, Saturday 9th July, 4:45pm K.O.

Matt Peet said the mood in camp is ‘positive and upbeat’ as the Warriors continue preparations ahead of Magic Weekend.

“It’s been good, there’s been a relatively short turnaround but everything is positive and upbeat, there’s lessons learned from the weekend and there’s plenty of reasons to be excited this week going into Magic,” he said.

This year will be the 15th Magic Weekend, on the event Peet said: “It’s got a special feel to it, but I think Magic Weekend in general over the years has brought that play off feel to it, a neutral venue with a mix of supporters there, it’s going to be good.

“There’s excitement but we’re just trying to keep everything in check and stay consistent. I’m sure it’ll build when we head off  to Newcastle on Friday but as far as training this week, it has been business as usual.”

Wigan face local rivals St Helens in a derby fixture at Newcastle, which is also a top of the table clash: “To us it’s the biggest game of the weekend but when you look across all the games, the way the league table has developed, they all look interesting in their own way but for us, Wigan v Saints stands alone.”

On their opponents this week, the Warriors boss added: “You never go into this game looking at form or player availability. We’re comfortable about how we’re progressing, we haven’t spoken massively about St Helens and I think they’ll be the same, it’s about taking the best of us into the weekend.

“We concentrate on ourselves, they’re a class team and a strong Club – a bit like what we take pride in, when one bloke drops out you generally find that the next lad in has that DNA running through them.”

Finally, Peet addressed the Sky Zero collaboration across the weekend, encouraging people to think about climate change: “I think it’s a brilliant concept and something of critical importance at the minute that we raise awareness of anything to do with sustainability. We can play a small part as individuals and as a sport even in comparison to some other industries in the World, but it’s important that we set an example and do the right thing. Every little helps.”
