In Memoriam: Malcolm Smith

Wigan Warriors are greatly saddened to learn of the passing of former player Malcolm Smith.

Malcolm was born on 25th October 1958 at Carr Mill, St Helens, and attended Rivington Road School.

Initially, Smith began his Rugby League career at St Helens – progressing through their Colts system, making his Saint debut in 1978.

In Season 1979-80, Smith crossed over Billinge Hill and signed for Wigan – making his debut on 28th October 1979 in a First Division match at the Boulevard against Hull, coming off the bench in a 27 points to 10 defeat – earning himself a Wigan Heritage Number 757.

During the 1979-80 season, Wigan were experiencing a transition period and rebuilding for the future and Smith was a strong, powerful player, and a valued squad member playing the majority of his rugby in the hooking position, but on several occasions played as a front-rower highlighting his quality as a utility forward.

Sadly, at the end of the 1979-80 Wigan suffered the agony of relegation to the second division.

However, in season 1980-81 under new player-coach George Fairbairn, Smith was an integral member of the promotion-winning team that brought back first division rugby to Central Park.

Smith played his last game for Wigan on 18th October 1981 against Leeds at Headingley in a John Player First Round match, Wigan lost by 19 points to 10 defeat. Overall, he played 34 games and scored 11 tries for Wigan.

Sadly, Malcolm Smith passed away on 25th June 2022 in Chatham, Kent, aged 63.

Everyone at Wigan Warriors send their condolences to Malcolm’s family and friends at this sad time.
