Peet: Be more clinical

Matt Peet said his side need to be ‘more clinical’ after Wigan were left to rue some missed opportunities against St Helens on Good Friday.

Speaking at full time, Peet said: “Game wise I thought it was quite equal early on, there were opportunities that we didn’t take and when St Helens had similar opportunities, they took them and they were clinical. Going into half time, we were 8-points down but I thought we were in decent shape and second half they were much better. We failed to hold them and they were clinical, which we knew they would be.”

He added: “What we’ve learnt is that we can create opportunities but we need to be better when we create them, need to be more clinical as they are few and far between. We know St Helens are a quality team who can pin you down your own end and when you get out and you’ve got them on the back foot you’ve got to be better with the ball. Some of our turnovers towards the end of the first half weren’t great, but we want to play a certain way so that’s the risk it brings.”

Peet felt that the performance gave him a good gauge of how to progress ahead of the next game: “We know where we are, we need to be more consistent and that comes from everything we’ve been doing in day-to-day practice, it was never going to be a quick fix or a quick job for us to overtake such a quality team and we just keep working hard.”

Tommy Leuluai left the field in the second half after a bruising stint: “Tommy got an injury to his knee but it’s too early to say much more at this stage, I’m not sure on everyone else as we speak.”

The Warriors now focus on Monday, as they welcome Wakefield Trinity to the DW Stadium. On how they deal with the short turnaround, the Warriors boss said: “It’ll 100% be about recovery and discussing with the lads. Those that pull through well and those who we may need to rotate so it’ll very much be picking up in the morning and see if anyone pulls up.”
