Peet: We were determined

  • Peet: “I can’t stress enough how proud I was of the lads in those closing minutes.”
  • FT | Wigan Warriors 19-18 Hull FC.

Matt Peet said he was ‘pleased’ with his side who dug deep to steal a win over Hull FC in the dying minutes through a Harry Smith drop goal.

“I thought defensively we were good all night, we were determined,” he said, “I thought there were times when we became a bit predictable with the ball, I thought we could’ve looked to play more and we need to develop that confidence in those tight games to still back our skill. I think we completed up at 90-odd percent in both halves of the game but we need to ask more questions.”

On the late winner from the boot of Harry Smith, the Head Coach said: It was outstanding from Harry, I think we all know he’s capable of it. It wasn’t the prettiest but he practices hard, he’s very good in the pressure moments but I think credit must also go to Liam Farrell he made a carry in that last few minutes which got us moving forward and got us into position for Harry to slot the drop goal.

“His confidence, holding your nerve and practice but also your team mates working hard to get you in good field position. I can’t stress enough how proud I was of the lads in those closing minutes, they train hard, they’re fit and mobile forwards and that’s what we pride ourselves on.”

Hull did put the pressure on the Warriors and did get over for three tries on the night: “I think the challenge of defending a team such as Hull and the physicality they bring, takes energy. So then we didn’t play with as much energy with the ball and that’s where we need to be better.”

Finally, Peet praised the contributions of Jai Field and Bevan French, who made his return to Cherry & White for the first time in almost a year: “It was an excellent second try from Jai, it broke the game wide open. There were threats on both teams, you could see watching that Jai and Jake Connor, or other players around them, one of them was going to break the game open at some point. Jai has the pace where he can do that and there’s a few times you see the ball bounce and you know if it lands in the arms of Jai or Bevan then it could be four points. On top of that, I thought his defence was outstanding, he played really brave and I think he’s enjoying it.”

He added: “It’s great to see him (Bevan) out there and I just had a joke with him about making tackles from marker which I don’t think is in the job description but I loved to see him out there. He’s one of those players you love to watch, much like Jai.”

Next up for the Warriors, it’s back to Betfred Challenge Cup business as we face Wakefield Trinity on the road for the Quarter Finals on Sunday 10th April, 2:30pm K.O. Get all the information on tickets HERE.
