Patrick Mago says Wigan ‘need to win the middle’ as they prepare to face Hull FC in Round 7 of Betfred Super League this Thursday night.

“They have some big boys up front and they’re going to try and match with us in the middle, if we can do our job in the middle and try and win that, it’ll allow Jai and the other boys at the back to score some tries, do all the fancy stuff. We just need to win the middle,” he said.

Mago will also come up against some familiar faces in the Hull side: “I know Andre Savelio and Joey Lovodua, I’m good friends with them so it’ll be good to see them but I’m hoping I can get one up on them.

“I’ve played with both of them and Hull as a team as well have some good hands, they’re going to come out firing but if we stay on top of our game the result will take care of itself.”

Talking about his time at Wigan so far, and the way he is playing under Matt Peet, Mago said: “I give Matt credit for allowing me to play the game I want to play, it gives me a lot more freedom in what I can do. If I can continue to keep doing that, hopefully I bring something to the team.”

He added: “I’ve said before that I am happy playing wherever on the field, if the opportunity comes to start then I’ll take it with both hands but I’m happy doing my role on the field at the moment, coming on off the bench as impact. Wherever the team needs me I’ll make sure I’m putting my best foot forward playing footy.”

The forward is also looking forward to being in front of the home fans, and hearing his chant once again: “I enjoy it, it’s good and it gets me up, especially when I’m tired too. When I hear it, it brings me some extra energy but the fans here are crazy and I love playing at home. The song that they’ve made, there’s a lot of people singing it and it’s something I enjoy and I’ve never experienced before so it’s been good.

“I’m enjoying my time here, it’s good that we’re winning games as well. It’s good that people keep turning out, even on those days where it’s cold as at night and they still rock up, sit up there and chant. It’s great!”
