After an extended spell on the sidelines following a back operation, Ethan Havard made his first appearance of 2022 as Wigan beat Castleford Tigers on Thursday evening.

“It’s really good to be back,” Havard said, “I’ve had a long time out recovering and training but it’s good to be back out there.”

Speaking on his injury lay off, he said: “My first op didn’t go to plan, so I ended up having two operations. There was plenty of work from the physio staff to get me back playing now.

“It was really good that I got to go to France, it was good for my recovery to be with the boys and back into training, back into game speed and those kinds of things so it was good to get over there.”

Reflecting on the game, the forward said: “It was a good start and there was plenty of good signs in the second half as well but a couple of little errors creeped in and we ended up on the back foot, but the boys cleaned it up in the end and we got the two points. Everyone’s searching for that 80-minute performance, we didn’t quite get it today but that’s what we want as well.”

Havard opened the second half scoring as he went over in the 45th minute with a drop of the shoulder: “There was a little chat from Ollie before the game so I expected it and it felt good to get over.”

The forward did admit this his effort might have been overshadowed by the effort from Jai Field that followed: “Jai’s was a little bit further out than mine, and a little bit faster as well. Jai is unbelievable, he’s got great speed and agility, he can score from anywhere.”

“It was nice to be back out there in front of the DW Stadium and I’m looking forward to getting into the Challenge Cup.”

The Warriors are back in action next Friday 25th March as they take on Salford Red Devils at the DW Stadium in a bid to progress to the quarter-finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup. Find out more about how to get your tickets HERE.
