Warriors weekend round-up

  • Wigan Warriors beat Toulouse Olympique at the Stade Ernest-Wallon on Saturday evening.
  • Wigan Warriors Reserves were in action at home to Newcastle Thunder on Sunday afternoon.
  • Wigan Warriors Wheelchair got their Super League campaign underway on Sunday.

The Warriors had three teams in action over the weekend as the first team faced Toulouse in the South of France, the Reserves faced Newcastle Thunder at Robin Park Arena whilst our Wheelchair side played London Roosters in their first ever Betfred Wheelchair Super League game.

The Warriors kick-started a good weekend of results for the Cherry & Whites as Matt Peet’s side came from behind to make it a fourth consecutive victory in Super League as Harry Smith slotted a last-minute drop goal to see Wigan to a 29-28 win over Toulouse in the first meeting between the two sides.

Reserves

The Reserves made it two wins from two in a dominant display against Newcastle Thunder at Robin Park Arena on Sunday. The Warriors ran in 14 tries, with the visitors getting a consolation effort on the full time hooter to deny Wigan a clean sheet.

Jack Bibby opened the scoring, before Jacob Douglas raced from half way to score the Warriors second. Tom Mitchell finished off a nice shift left, before Tom Forber went over from close range and Kieran Tyrer rounded off a good team move, all converted by Ben O’Keefe to give Wigan a 30-0 lead after 25 minutes.

Junior Nsemba, Adam Jones and Logan Astley all went over with fine efforts, with Tom Forber securing his brace before half time as Wigan went in at 54-0.

Kavan Rothwell went over from half time kick off, with Junior Nsemba getting his second effort just moments later. A good kick and chase was finished off by Ellis Hobson as Wigan made it 70-0 on the hour mark. Adam Jones and Logan Astley both added to their personal tallies to extend Wigan’s lead, but a late consolation effort from Sam Murtagh for the visitors saw the game finish 80-4.

Wheelchair

Wigan Warriors Wheelchair also had a winning weekend in their first ever game in Betfred Wheelchair Super League as they faced London Roosters at LJMU. It was a good opening test for the Warriors, who were challenged from start to finish from the visiting Roosters side.

Martin Norris was a star performer with four tries to his name, Declan Roberts also crossed for two tries along with a 100% conversion record. Mark Williams got as brace as Adam Rigby, Matt Wooloff and Chris Greenhalgh also got on the scoresheet for the Cherry & Whites to secure a fantastic 66-28 win in their first ever game.
