Thomas Leuluai spoke to Wigan TV to reflect pre-season so far, entering his 12th season with Wigan and an update on his hamstring injury.

“It’s not the nicest time of the season pre-season. It’s a bit different and I’m enjoying the change,” he said.

“I’ve still got that desire to win and to be part of a good team and to help contribute and win stuff. Last year didn’t feel like the right time to finish, I knew I had something in there and that drove me – wanting to leave the Club in a good position has really driven me this year.”

Leuluai suffered a season-ending hamstring injury towards the back end of the Warriors 2021 campaign but is feeling positive with his recovery so far: “I always to try and do my bit but this year we’ve taken a different approach and being smart with what I do. Matt (Peet) has been clear that I will have a rest during the year.”

“I always want to be part of it. I know where I need to be at and I don’t think I’m too far off from where I need to be for the start of the season. I’ve played way longer than I thought I would, I’m very grateful to the Club and I just want to get back this year.”

Captain Leuluai has been head-first into pre-season alongside some new teammates as well as new Coaching Team: “I’ve been really impressed with all of them. They’re good people and they’ve fit into the group, we’ve got a new way of doing things and everyone is finding their feet but it’s been enjoyable. A mention for Ramon Silva, I’ve been impressed with him.

“Lee Briers, I’ve really enjoyed his sessions. I knew he would be sound but I’ve been very impressed with what he’s brought. I’ve played against him for a long time and he’s a real thinker. As much as we can pick up from him the better, we’re very lucky.”

The scrum half summarised by talking about the Warriors Unite initiative which sees players and staff heading out into the Community on a weekly basis: “I enjoy it, getting to engage with the community. We all have a laugh and try to make it as fun as we can for the kids.

Leuluai out and about in the community.

“For the young boys, it’s something they can learn and get used to. The more you can give back and try to be more of a community team – I know how much Rugby League means to the town, It’s really good.”
