Lam: Attack will come

Adrian Lam has stated Wigan’s attack will improve and has noticed signs that prove that as the Warriors prepare to face Hull FC on Saturday.

The Cherry and Whites will go into the game off the back of a loss to Warrington last week, having scored just the one try in the Dacia Magic Weekend game.

Wigan can clinch fourth spot in the Betfred Super League Play-Offs with a win against Hull at the MKM Stadium and Lam believes ‘fluency’ is the key for his team.

Speaking to the media this week, he said: “There’s still work to do to clinch fourth spot. We’ve got it in our own hands. It’s important we turn up this week and get the win – which will locks us in and guarantees us fourth place.

“It’s important you find your fluency. We’re working really hard on that. It’s difficult when you’ve not had confidence over the past two months. If we have our defence nailed on we always have a chance to win games. The attack will come.

“We need that cohesion to be gelled together. We pass the ball and have more attacking strikes than anyone in the competition, we just need that execution and hopefully the timing falls in line with the end of the season.”

Looking back at last week’s defeat to Warrington at the Dacia Magic Weekend, Lam reiterated how proud he was of his team and stated the areas where the players can improve heading into the game against Hull.

“We were really tough and it was a resilient effort,” Lam said. “Energy areas were awesome I just felt we could have attacked a bit better. I’m looking forward to us improving on that and scoring more points this weekend.”

On the opposition this week, the boss is aware of the individual talent Hull possess and says it will be a ‘tough ask’, but admits it’s what Wigan need heading into the Play-Offs in two weeks’ time.

“They’re a team of great Individuals. They’ve been no different with injures. To travel up there and play there is a real tough ask for us but it’s what we need leading into these big games.

“They’ve got a strong squad that are some of the best in the competition. I’ve got to make sure I put all the energy in my team. I’m looking forward to travelling up there and having a strong performance.

“You’ve got to address and look after their strengths as well but it’s about us. Let’s take another step forward to where we want to go.”

Lam also provided an update on Oliver Gildart and Jai Field. Gildart was a late withdrawal from last week’s team that played against Warrington after he picked up a groin strain in the warm-up in Newcastle, meanwhile Field continues to recover also from a groin strain.

Field continues his recovery from a groin strain.

“We’ll give Gilly every day up until Saturday to make a decision,” Lam said. “Jai is on a day-to-day proposition. We’ll see how he goes – he’s had a niggly injury.”
