Wigan host girls rugby festival

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation hosted a War of the Roses girls rugby festival on Wednesday as four Under-14s teams battled it out in a 9s competition at Robin Park Arena.

Ashton, Leigh, Oulton and Stanningley were all involved in the competition, with Oulton coming out on top and winning the competition with all three wins. Local team Ashton finished second, while Stanningley came third and Leigh finished fourth.

All teams played each other once in a 15 minute game, as parents and families watched on proud on the sidelines.

Once the competition had concluded, all of the girls and their families from all four team made the short walk over to the DW Stadium to watch Wigan take on Leeds in the Betfred Super League.

Rachel Thompson, community coach and captain of Wigan Warriors Women, ran the event and was pleased with how it played out.

She said: “I thought that the festival ran very well, all the girls seemed to be having a great time and really enjoying themselves in what were fast paced games. There was some great skill on show from all the girls and it just shows how much talent there is around girls rugby and it’s great to see. The future of the game is definitely in safe hands.”
