Warriors duo a part of history

Wigan Warriors PDRL pair Ben Seward and Steve Mort were a part of history last Sunday as they represented Lancashire in the first ever Physical Disability Rugby League Origin fixture against Yorkshire.

The White Rose ended up being victorious at Warrington’s Victoria Park with a 16-14 score line, but it was a memorable day for Seward who managed to cross over for a brace of tries.

Aside from the Origin game, there was a festival of Rugby League taking place with Wigan, Warrington, St Helens and Widnes entering two Learning Disability RL teams. Both Wigan teams played six games each with 49 tries being scored and the Warriors remained unbeaten, with 11 wins and 1 draw.

Warriors disability head coach, Gareth Roughton, said: “It was great to see the lads back out enjoying the game after all this time. The festivals have always been a great way of seeing the team grow and showcase how not only Wigan, but the Learning Disability format of the game is progressing.

“I know all the players were excited and pumped to get out there and play and they defiantly showed that they have been working hard in training and during the pandemic. The focus now is making sure that the group we have continues to develop and grow so we can offer those who want to be involved the opportunities that the current squad has.”
