Bibby: Found a way to win

  • Jake Bibby reflects on Wigan’s Round 1 victory over Leigh.
  • Bibby: “It is always good to get a try, especially when it’s make or break.”

Jake Bibby hopes to add more ‘consistency’ to his attacking game after scoring twice in Friday’s opening round victory against Leigh Centurions.

The centre’s double helped the Warriors to come from behind and claim a 20-18 win against their local rivals.

After his brace, Bibby wants to build on this performance and continue to improve.

He said: “I usually take more pride in my defence, but it is always good to get a try, especially when it’s make or break. Attack is always the thing I need to build on, but I feed off the quality lads around me and I just need to nail my consistency.”

Bibby goes over for his second try against Leigh.

Despite trailing 18-0 against Leigh on Friday night, the 24-year-old states the Wigan squad were always confident they could get something from the game.

“Leigh came out all guns blazing, but we knew there would be a point where they would drop off, even if it took a longer than we thought. It wasn’t pretty or pleasant, but we found a way to win and it’s a good platform to build on.”

Bibby says that fitness played a big part in the comeback after a tough pre-season, as well as a strong desire to win.

“We can hang in with any team and knew we would turn it around. It’s expected of you to win (at Wigan), a grittiness is built in the team and you can never doubt the character of the lads. Even if we aren’t performing, we can get results by grinding it out.”

Bibby believes the Warriors showed ‘determination’ to get the victory.

The Warriors had to deal with the absence of a number of players heading into the opening game of the new season, with a reshuffle needed during the match after an injury to debutant Jai Field.

Bibby, who filled in on the right wing, believes the display showed the ‘determination’ in squad.

“It wasn’t our strongest starting side, but we are putting our hands up to play out of position. I have the desire to play centre, but, wherever I’m needed, I will go to do a job for the team.

“This will build experience for some of the lads, and it will only benefit them further down the line.”
