Morgan Smithies is looking forward to the healthy competition amongst the Wigan pack in 2021 as he pushes for a starting role.

Back in pre-season training, the loose forward is gearing up for the Betfred Super League kicking off in late March.

Speaking about the challenging experience of pre-season, Smithies said: “I’ve had a good break and some quality time with the family. However, it’s good to be back in and to see everyone in training.

“It’s been quite tough, lots of running and two gym sessions a day, but that’s what pre-season is all about.

“It’s quite a big pre-season for me, because I’m keen to get as strong, as fast, and as powerful as possible. When the season comes around, I will be more than ready.”

The youngster has already made 40 appearances for the Cherry and Whites and will likely hit the 50 milestone before his 21st birthday in November.

On clocking up so many games at a young age, he said: “As a player you don’t think about milestones much, but it would be pretty nice to bring up the 50 before I’m 21.”

However, Smithies is well aware that with so many talented players in the Wigan forward pack, game time will not be guaranteed for anyone.

“There will be competition, but it’s healthy competition. In my opinion it brings the best out of players, both training and playing. I look forward to pushing for a starting shirt.

“I’m looking to have a consistent year and keep my standards high. There are still loads of areas which I can improve on, so it is exciting.”

On Saturday, members of the first team squad headed to Haigh Hall in snowy conditions for some hill sprints and running.

Smithies said: “It was a good session, quite tough, but we just got stuck in, and we will be looking forward to more to come.”
