Rugby Memories goes digital

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation are launching an online version of their Rugby Memories sessions to reach out to those who have been isolated as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rugby Memories was introduced two years ago to reduce social isolation and support people living with dementia.

The award-winning programme has been very popular, providing much needed support for some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

The programme also identified the need for the provision of physical activities for this group and hence a new programme, ‘Moving Memories’, was launched. Dramatically improved the health and wellbeing of the group members, the Moving Memories sessions have helped to increase activity levels in a safe and supported environment.

Sessions have introduced members to new ways of keeping active, including dance and Tai Chi, and activities such as yoga and pilates have helped them to relax and reduce stress levels.

Current Government guidelines on social distancing have prevented the delivery of all group sessions.

As a way to stay connected with the groups, and thanks to funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, the Community Foundation are now able to deliver a digital programme of activities to keep in touch, and keep people moving.

Health and Wellbeing Manager, Claire Taylor said: “We know how much group members value the work of the Community Foundation, and we are looking forward to getting everyone back together, even if it is only virtually for the time being.

“Members have really missed the social interaction and the activities. The weekly sessions will help people to feel connected to their club and friends, and the activities will help to get them moving again – improving their physical health and their sense of wellbeing.”

The first digital sessions will be available on the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation Facebook page with timing details to be confirmed in due course.
