Development days a success

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation wrapped up another successful week of development days for talented young rugby players over October half-term.

The Club’s Robin Park Arena opened its doors to welcome over 180 children across the 30th and 31st October for two days of fun-filled rugby coaching and activities.

Rugby-mad youngsters ranging from U13s to U16s enjoyed the experience of developing their skills with guidance from the Club’s Community Foundation coaches, Club staff and help from Wigan Warriors Education students.

The camps were also provided in partnership with the England Talent Pathway.

Shane Eccles Wigan Warriors Academy Head Coach: “It was fantastic to be able to host these camps over the half-term break. To have over 180 kids working on and developing their rugby league skills with our coaches is great to see and be involved in.

“These kids are the future of our sport and to provide them with opportunities to work within the Wigan Warriors environment, using the facilities that the first team use, hopefully ignites their ambition and motivation to follow in the footsteps of those current Super League stars.

“After such a long period of disruption for these players’ development, we wanted to make sure we were providing opportunities to ensure they are still able to develop and showcase their skills.

“Our message to all these kids is to keep working hard on their skills with their community clubs when they can, and keep their eyes open for when we promote our next run of development days.”

Attendee Nathan Benson on the experience: “I have been attending the Wigan Warriors camps for the last few years.

“With all the restrictions in place over Covid-19, they still made the camp very enjoyable.

“I really enjoy the training and the coaches are good. I learned a lot attending these camps and look forward to more.”
