Bullock: Just reward

Joe Bullock says winning the League Leaders’ Shield is what Wigan Warriors deserve after a disrupted Betfred Super League season.

Following Friday night’s 19-6 victory over Huddersfield, Adrian Lam’s side lifted the League Leaders’ Shield and will now have a week off before the Play-Off Semi Final next Thursday.

Bullock was pleased to pick up his first piece of silverware in Cherry and White, and hopes it will be followed by more in the next few weeks.

“It is the first bit of silverware for us as a group, so it’s good accolade to have. It’s a nice reward after all the hard work and sacrifices throughout the year. Hopefully we can kick on and push for the Grand Final.”

Bullocks hopes the Warriors can push on to Play-Off success.

The 27-year-old says the squad will use the week off wisely, and won’t let it stop their good form.

“Sometimes in rugby it is all about momentum, but after a pretty hectic season there are a lot of tired bodies so we will need that down time to get our energy back. There won’t be a lack of motivation in the camp, I think everyone will be wishing this week away and wanting to get into the Semi Final.”

The prop believes the Warriors have been growing as a team for the last two seasons, and they have now started to show their best form.

“The two years I’ve been here we’ve been a good team consistently but not played well on the days when it has mattered. I think we have righted a few of those wrongs and corrected what we are doing. On the back of the Saints and Huddersfield games it has given us confidence for the big games because we know what we are capable of.

“I think we have learned from the mistakes we have made, knowing when it gets to the tough games we have to be switched on. We are definitely hitting our form and winning the League Leaders’ Shield shows we are consistently the best. It has been a building process, but I think it is coming together.”

The prop wants to keep improving his own personal performances.

On a personal note, Bullock is pleased with his recent performances but knows there is still room for him to get even better.

“I’m really enjoying it. Playing for Wigan is a tough job with a lot of great players fighting for places so it brings your best out. I’m definitely not the finished product yet, but it gives me added motivation each week to make sure my game is as perfect as it can be.”
