Smithies: We’re motivated

  • Morgan Smithies says there is hunger in the Wigan Warriors squad to return to Betfred Super League action.
  • The Warriors will play their first game since 13th March in less than two weeks’ time against Wakefield Trinity.
  • Smithies also talks about training in lockdown and last week’s return to Robin Park Arena.

Although it’s been 19 weeks since Wigan Warriors were last in Betfred Super League action, Morgan Smithies admits his side still have their previous defeat to Salford Red Devils in the back of their minds.

The young forward says there is real hunger within the Warriors camp to return to competitive action and continue their quest to achieve goals of silverware this season.

Wigan play Wakefield Trinity in just 13 days’ time as Adrian Lam’s team resume the campaign at the top of the table.

Smithies said: “Our last game vs Salford wasn’t the result we wanted – everyone has got that in the back of their minds and we’re really looking forward to getting back on the pitch again.

“The mood is good. We’re all happy to be back and we’ve got a goal to reach, and we’re all training hard to try to achieve it.”

Like all rugby league players, 19-year-old Smithies has trained by himself at home throughout lockdown for the past four months and after the Warriors returned to full team training at Robin Park Arena last week, he shared his delight to be back.

“It has been a bit weird but I’m glad to finally be back and to be back as a group too – training together.

“I think I coped with lockdown as best as I could have done. Training by yourself is tough though but now we’re back as a squad it feels a lot better and we are all training hard.

“I was a bit apprehensive about returning. We have to follow the procedures and keep two metres apart as much as we can, but once we’re on the field it is like any other session – the effort is there and we’re all trying to get better.”
