Warriors to wear knife crime awareness shirts

Wigan Warriors will walk out in Knife Crime Awareness shirts prior to tonight’s home clash against London Broncos.

The Warriors will walk out at The Brick Community Stadium wearing knife crime awareness shirts designed by pupils from St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School. The players will continue to wear the shirts during an Armed Forces minutes silence prior to kick off, which will also remember the life of Rob Burrow CBE.

Patrick Mago, Tiaki Chan and Martin Offiah MBE attended a Police Inspiration Day at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School in April as the trio joined Year 5 and 6 pupils in completing a knife crime workshop. Classes engaged in several workshops including a weapons museum, crime scene investigation, internet and social media awareness, with pupils also receiving a visit from the police horse and dog units.

The Police Inspiration Day, which was assisted by Warriors Community Foundation Coaches in partnership with Wigan Council and Greater Manchester Police, provided children of all ages with an insight into the life of the police force as well as the importance of combating hard hitting topics such as knife crime and internet awareness.

Pupils on the workshop took part in a knife crime prevention awareness designing competition, with the winning posters now displayed across the borough and on the front of the shirts the Warriors will wear pre-game.

Wigan Warriors Schools Education Manager, Scott Rafferty said: “The knife crime awareness workshop at St Aidan’s has been a crucial initiative that will not only spread a positive message, but also support our community by raising awareness about the dangers of knife crime whilst teaching us how to avoid potentially life-threatening situations.

“The day was a huge success delivered in partnership GMP and Wigan Council, and I’d like to send a special thanks to Joanne and the staff at St. Aidan’s for trusting us to deliver this sensitive topic in school.”

St Aidan’s will be flag wavers at The Brick Community Stadium tonight whilst competition winners Thomas Berry and Ava Parker will be presented with prizes at half time.

Tickets for tonight’s clash can be purchased from The Brick Community Stadium Ticket Office until kick off as well as online HERE.
